There are some simple steps to take to prepare your home, office, and your family for a disaster. You should know how to respond to severe weather or any disaster that could occur in your area - hurricanes, earthquakes, winter storms, flooding, wildfires, even terrorism. Your disaster preparedness plan should include you being self-sufficient for at least three days with your own survival kit. This may mean providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water, and sanitation. Having a plan in place could make the difference between life and death. Pets
You need to check with local emergency planners to determine how they will handle pet evacuations during and after a disaster. Many communities allow and encourage you to take your pets with you when evacuating and you need to understand that your pets will not be allowed in shelters along with people. Separate animal shelters will most likely be established by local volunteer groups to manage displaced pets and animals. You should also know of hotels outside your immediate area that accept pets in case you evacuate out of the area. You may also want to have a list of boarding facilities outside your area as well. Since it is highly probable that at some point you will be separated from your pets or large animals, it is critical that they be readily identified. Having appropriately sized kennels, carriers and cages is important to facilitate the transport of your pet.
